Airbnb was reaping the benefits of its migration to microservices, but soon managing hundreds of services and thousands of APIs created new problems. The dependency graph became too complicated, which impacted scalability, reliability, and velocity. Airbnb is tackling these challenges via introducing a unified read and write GraphQL APIs that provides an abstraction for the underlying data domain. This unified layer built on top of a standardized GraphQL framework consolidates data schema, simplifies data loading and stitching and promotes reusability. Learn the design thinking and trade-offs considered for these technical shifts aimed to simplify their service-oriented architecture.
