DevOps teams, who are working autonomously, have proliferated in recent years. The widespread adoption of the DevOps culture has made a substantial impact on companies. The latter are reshaping themselves on their journey towards becoming more digital. The area of API management is no exception to this: whereas in the past it was mostly beyond question to buy fully-fledged products from big vendors, the situation is changing now. In this talk, we are challenging this preconceived mindset / decision-making and present a lightweight alternative, composed from an open-source stack which covers the key capabilities of API management. The corresponding API management workflow we present is from a team-centric perspective, i.e. for the DevOps teams developing and operating their products and offerings as APIs throughout the full API lifecycle. The workflow is developer-friendly, multi-tenant, supports the notion of self-services, and is geared towards automation (e.g. by integration with a CI/CD pipeline or declarative Kubernetes resource description). Moreover, we explain decision criteria for when it is advisable to buy, and when to make your own API management stack.
